Contributing disciplines to cosmetic surgery include maxillofacial surgery, otolaryngology, dermatology and general surgery. It is specifically concerned with maintaining ‘normal’ appearance, restoring it, and improving it. Almost 11 million cosmetic surgery operations were preformed during 2006, in the US alone.

‘Plastic surgery’ and ‘cosmetic surgery’ are two important words to distinguish apart. Plastic surgery is a specialized type of surgery dedicated to the repair of bodily form and function. This includes both cosmetic surgery and reconstruction surgery. The term ‘cosmetic surgery’ specializes on the improvement of appearance alone. Cosmetic surgery procedures are used in many other surgical disciplines such as dermatology, general surgery, plastic surgery, otolaryngology and oculoplastic surgery.

The terms ‘plastic surgery’ and ‘cosmetic surgery’ are very similar but they do have one important difference; Plastic surgery includes the repair of both form and function, it includes cosmetic surgery but also includes reconstructive surgery. Cosmetic surgery, however, specializes in the improvement of cosmetics alone. Many other surgical procedures require the use of cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Arthur Millman is an oculo-facial plastic surgeon specializes in surgery of the full face and neck, eyelids, brows, tears ducts and orbit (eye socket) and is now offering Fraxel Treatment!

As with many aspects of medicine and technology, “State of the Art” care today involves the use of specialists. Specialists are surgeons who have obtained advanced and additional training beyond conventional surgical residency to practice the most advanced techniques of surgery.

Dr. Arthur Millman brings unique skills he has perfected through extensive fellowship training , many years of surgical experience and thousands of surgical successes. Dr. Millman has Board certifications including ophthalmology, Oculoplastic Surgery, and cosmetic surgery, and advanced training in facial plastic surgery.

Fraxel® Laser Treatment is a safe, non-invasive procedure that allows you to rediscover the fresh, healthy skin of your youth.

Benefits of Fraxel® Laser Treatment: It Improve texture tone and pore size and Erases unwanted brown spots, it also Smoothes wrinkles around the eyes and acne scars. It rejuvenates your neck, chest and hands with minimal downtime.

So far only two varieties of laser treatment have been available for cosmetic enhancement-ablative and non-ablative. Traditional ablative, which literally means vaporization at a very high temperature, are very effective at destroying unwanted tissue but may have significant side-effects and require a lengthy healing period. Non-fractional non-ablative, on the other hand, have very few side-effects and require almost no healing time, but may involve numerous treatments over many months to achieve only modest results.

At long last, a laser with the potency of ablative treatments and the gentle safety of non-ablative lasers received clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration to treat a variety of important cosmetic conditions.

Fraxel® Laser Treatment is designed to target aging and damaged skin by creating microscopic “wounds” within the targeted areas that penetrate well beneath the skin’s outermost layer. In this way, Fraxel® Laser treatments trigger the body’s own natural production of new collagen and skin cells. And because Fraxel® Laser Treatment combines the impact of ablative lasers with the gentleness of non-ablative lasers, healing occurs so quickly that there is very little downtime for patients.

After several years of studies and mounting evidence of the Fraxel® Laser’s safety and effectiveness, the FDA has cleared this unique new laser to treat the following conditions: Acne Scars, Age Spots/Brown Spots, Melasma (Mask of Pregnancy), Wrinkles Around The Eyes,

Dr. Millman has 20 years of microsurgical and laser surgical experience due to his combined training in Oculo-facial plastic and Cosmetic Surgery. The Manhattan Center for Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery offers the following procedures: Corrective Surgery after previous Surgery resulting in unhappy patients. Composite Eyelid Lift and Brow Lift, Face Lift, Cheek and Neck Rejuvenation (Face Lift, Cheek & Neck Lift) Facial Augmentation – Cheek and Chin Implants Non-Surgical Rejuvenation techniques (Botox, Restylane, Perlane, Radiance, Scupltra, Fat Transfer, Chemical Peels, Lasers) Facial Cancer Surgery: All forms of skin and facial cancer including a comprehensive technique that includes complete cancer cure and simultaneous restoration of normal facial appearance (Basal Cell, Mohs Melganoma etc.) Congenital and Pediatric (Newborns with birth defects and undesirable facial appearance can be helped to live a more normal life)

The following list of questions may help to remind you of topics to discuss with your surgeon. You may have additional questions as well.

1. What are all my options for breast reconstruction?

2. What are the risks and complications of each type of breast reconstruction surgery and how common are they?

3. What if my cancer recurs or occurs in the other breast?

4. Will reconstruction interfere with my cancer treatment?

5. How many steps are there in each procedure, and what are they?

6. How long will it take to complete my reconstruction?

7. How much experience do you have with each procedure?

8. Do you have before and after photos I can look at for each procedure and what results are reasonable for me?

9. What will my scars look like?

10. What kind of changes in my implanted breast can I expect over time?

11. What kind of changes in my implanted breast can I expect with pregnancy?

12. What are my options if I am dissatisfied with the cosmetic outcome of my implanted breast?

13. Can I talk with other patients about their experiences?

14. What is the estimated total cost of each procedure?

15. How much will my health insurance carrier cover, especially any complication that may require surgery?

16. How much pain or discomfort will I feel, and for how long?

17. How long will I be in the hospital?

18. Will I need blood transfusions, and can I donate my own blood?

19. When will I be able to resume my normal activity (or sexual activity, or athletic activity)?

Other Factors to Consider in Breast Reconstruction Choosing a Surgeon

When choosing an experienced surgeon who is experienced with breast implantation, you should know the answers to the following questions:

1. How many breast reconstruction implantation procedures does he/she perform per year?

2. How many years has he/she performed breast implantation procedures?

3. Is he/she board certified, and if so, with which board?

4. In which states is he/she licensed to practice surgery?

Note that some states provide information on disciplinary action and malpractice claims/settlements to prospective patients either by request or on the world wide web. 5. What is the most common complication he/she encounters with breast implantation?

6. What is his/her reoperation rate with breast implantation and what is the most common type of reoperation he/she performs? Familiarize yourself with the following options in breast implant surgery and be prepared to discuss with your surgeon the following issues:

Implant Shape and Size

Depending on the desired shape you wish to achieve, you and your surgeon may choose a round or contoured implant shape. Generally, the larger you want your cup size, the larger the breast implant the surgeon will consider (measured in cubic centimeters, or cc’s). You should be aware that contoured implants that are placed submuscularly may assume a round shape after implantation.

Your surgeon will also evaluate your existing tissue to determine if you have enough to cover the breast implant. If you desire a breast implant size too large for your tissue, the surgeon may warn you that breast implant edges may be apparent or visible post-operatively. You may even risk surgical complications. Also, excessively large breast implants may speed up the effects of gravity and result in earlier droop or sag.

Surface Texturing

Textured surface implants were designed to reduce the chance of capsular contracture. Some information in the literature with small numbers of patients suggests that surface texturing reduces the chance of severe capsular contracture, but clinical information from studies of a large number of women with INAMED implants shows no difference in the likelihood of developing capsular contracture with textured implants compared to smooth surfaced implants.

Palpability

The following may cause implants to be more palpable (more easily felt): textured implants, larger implants, subglandular placement, and the amount of skin/tissue available to cover the implant.

Insurance

Most insurance covers the first breast reconstruction operation. Insurance coverage for reoperation procedures or additional surgeon’s visits following reconstruction may not be covered, depending on the policy.

If You Experience a Problem, should you Report It?

If you believe that you have experienced a serious problem(s) related to your breast implants, you should have your health professional report the problem(s) to FDA.

You are encouraged to report any adverse events through your health professional. Although reporting by physicians or other health professionals is preferred, women may also report any serious problem directly through the MedWatch voluntary reporting system.

An adverse event is serious and should be reported when it results in an initial or prolonged hospitalization, disability, congenital anomaly, or medical or surgical intervention. This information reported to MedWatch is entered into databases to be used to follow safety trends (patterns) of a device and to determine whether further follow-up of any potential safety issues related to the device is needed

St. Paul breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery performed by plastic surgeons in the area. Considering breast augmentation? There are many important considerations to think about before you meet with your doctor.

1) How many cosmetic breast enlargements have you done in the St. Paul, Minnesota area?

2) What is the best type of implant for me, silicone breast implants or saline?

3) Do you have breast augmentation before and after photos of your procedures I can see?

4) Of the 4 common breast augmentation incision methods, which can you perform? 1) Inframammary (under the breast fold), 2) Periaerolar (through the nipple), 3) Transaxillary (through the armpit), 4) Transumbilical (through the belly button)

5) What size options are possible for my breasts, and how should I choose my breast implant size?

6) What special precautions do I need to take before the procedure, and how long is the recovery time for each breast augmentation technique?

7) If I choose to become pregnant in the future, how will breast augmentation affect breastfeeding?

Before you have liposuction, there are a number of important steps to take to ensure both your safety and satisfaction with the procedure. The decision to have cosmetic surgery is not one to be taken lightly. Because of this, there are some tough questions you should always ask your liposuction surgeon. Some of these questions related directly to the skills, experience and qualifications of your doctor. Other questions relate to the procedure itself. By understanding these important factors and asking the following questions of your doctor, you can help ensure that your liposuction experience is a good one.

1. Are you certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?

Perhaps the most important question you can ask relates directly to your doctor’s qualifications. In some cases, doctors perform procedures that are outside of their specialty area. In order to be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a doctor must complete an additional residency that typically lasts between six to eight years. This rigorous training helps ensure that your doctor has the skills, qualifications and experience to provide the best possible results.

2. What are your safety and success rates?

Once you are sure your doctor has the knowledge, credentials and experience to perform your liposuction surgery, you should inquire about his or her safety record and success rates. While your doctor may not be able to provide exact number, you should be given a fairly accurate estimate of your doctor’s safety record. Additionally, your doctor should be able to give details on past patient successes, as well as difficulties or complications that have affected previous patients.

3. How much experience do you have performing this procedure?

Another important question to ask relates directly to the number of times your doctor has performed liposuction in the past. All doctors perform a variety of procedures, which means that your doctor may have more experience with certain types of surgeries. You want to be certain that your doctor performs liposuction procedures regularly. If a potential surgeon only performs liposuction occasionally, you may want to look for a doctor that specializes in this type of surgery.

4. How long will the recovery process take?

In addition to knowing how qualified your doctor is, you also need to have a solid understanding of the liposuction procedure itself. You will need to plan for the days and weeks following your surgery, which is why it is so important to talk to your doctor about the recover process. Your doctor should provide clear guidelines about how long it will be before you can return to normal activities, how much post-operative pain you will experience and how much care you will need after the procedure.

5. What results can I expect?

While there are never any exact guarantees with cosmetic procedures, your liposuction surgeon should be able to give you an indication of the type of results you can expect. Discuss this carefully with your doctor prior to the surgery. If your doctor promises results that seem unrealistic, then they probably are. Skilled and experienced doctors will be more conservative in their estimates.

Before you opt for liposuction, spend some time reviewing any concerns you may have with your liposuction doctor. Surgery is a big decision, so it pays to learn everything about your doctor, the surgery, liposuction price and the potential benefits and risks of surgery.

Maybe you are on the point of considering having some cosmetic surgery and if that is so, which to you is the most important aspect of the procedure? Money is obviously a concern to most of us but over all, the most important aspect is making the right choice of surgeon. After all, if the surgeon gets things wrong, no matter how much money you have spent, there may well be no way back.

How then can we find the right surgeon? Well, its very wise to do some initial research which can be done on the internet. Make a list of some potential surgeries and then by all means give them a phone call and ask a few other questions. Once thats done and you have a few ideas, next thing to do is talk with the surgeon and the clinic staff. Here are a few things to note:

* What are the end results you are looking for? You need to know this obviously well before you discuss things with any surgical practitioner, so its good to read about the potential op and have a look at some before and after pictures.

* Assess then who will be the best choice to do your procedure for you. The best way to do this once you have a small list of options is to go and visit the clinics and meet the staff and the potential surgeon. The surgeon should take the time to sit with you and discuss the procedure and answer any questions you have and meet any concerns too.

The final choice you make should be a board-certified practitioner and an active member of at least one relevant professional body. By this, they will be keeping up to date with the best surgical techniques and new technology in the industry. Skill levels vary depending on age and the number of ops completed of course, but thats not to say there are many highly skilled younger professionals around.

* When you visit a few surgeries, if you can, ask to see some before and after photographs of relevant procedures carried out by your potential surgeon. This is a must, so each surgeon should be very happy for you to see photos.

You can then compare one to another and see what you like and what you do not.

Just by following the above points will make this whole process that much less stressful. After all, its very time consuming, can be very expensive and can indeed also change your whole life. Get things off to a good start and you will be very thankful you did.

While cosmetic surgery has been popular with women for at least two decades, it is only recently that Dr. Haven Barlow, a well-known and respected plastic surgeon in Fairfax, Virginia, has noticed an increase in the number of men who visit his practice. Some of the more common procedures men are interested in include Botox, microdermabrasion, liposuction, and neck lifts.

Botox® is a botulinum toxin used to temporarily paralyze nerves within one’s facial appearance. Men may choose to have this safe, non-invasive procedure done to reduce the lines that may furrow their brows, or forehead.

Microdermabrasion is another common procedure used to improve the appearance of one’s skin by removing areas of damaged or wrinkled skin. Liposuction, a surgical procedure used to removed unwanted fat from the hips, legs, arms or backs can create a more youthful and athletic physique for men.

“Men are feeling more comfortable with being invested in their appearance,” says Dr. Barlow. “They notice how great their wives look, or they wish they looked differently, and aren’t afraid to ask how to gain back their younger-looking selves.”

As the population ages, many successful, vibrant men are re-thinking their attitudes to dieting, face-care products and cosmetic surgery. Wanting to look youthful and appear dynamic well into one’s 40s, 50s and 60s means that some men will turn to a trusted and experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Barlow for advice on how to regain a youthful appearance.

From 2000 to 2005, there was a 44 percent increase in minimally invasive cosmetic procedures among men, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures are those that do not require surgery and therefore mean a quicker return to the office and everyday life.

“Men are seeking out those treatments that will affect the way they look with the least possible fuss,” says Dr. Barlow. “They want to try something that is not a huge investment in time, like Botox. But they are also seeking out information on male breast reduction surgery, also known as gynecomastia, calf-implants and liposuction. Most of the time, they come in knowing what they want. But after spending some time discussing their goals, I can suggest some other procedures that may fit better with their expectations.”

For most men, discussing these procedures may at first feel uncomfortable. Dr. Barlow has three suggestions for men when discussing what their goals are for plastic surgery:

1. Identify exactly which physical attributes are making you uncomfortable. Do you wish you looked slimmer, more youthful or would you like to change the shape of your ears, nose or chest? Do you have a clear goal in mind? These will help your plastic surgeon determine the best plan of action.

2. Bring in a picture of yourself when you were younger, or a celebrity whose looks and physique you admire. This will help guide both you and your plastic surgeon toward your ultimate goal.

3. Keep an open mind about the procedures and techniques you are willing to try. Dr. Barlow’s number one goal with all his patients is to be sure they understand the benefits of each procedure, so they can make an informed decision about how to proceed.

Looking to the future, Dr. Barlow says he expects tummy tucks and body lifts to become even more popular among men. Men are also electing to have liposuction under the chin, to minimize any unattractive bulges that may occur when wearing a tie.

Dr. Haven Barlow has been specializing in plastic and cosmetic surgery for 20 years in Virginia, Maryland and the DC Metro area. He is currently the Chief of Plastic Surgery at INOVA Fairfax Hospital, and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Plastic and cosmetic surgery is not something we should take lightly. It’s not something we can entrust just anyone to do for us. Plastic and cosmetic surgery could ruin you if done unprofessionally and wrongly. This is why you should a plastic surgeon that you can trust with the procedures.

How do you go about looking for the right surgeon? Finding the right surgeon is easy, but it is not a short process nor is it something that we can just do randomly. Serious consideration is needed to find the best surgeon in your area.

Recommendations From People You Know: One of the best steps you can take in looking for the right surgeon is to ask your friends and family if they know one who is good and reliable. It is better take the recommendations of the people among your social circles since you know that the recommended surgeons have a good reputation among your friends. Make a list of the surgeons your family and friends recommended. This list will prove to be better than looking for a surgeon on the phonebook or the yellow pages.

Go Visit the Surgeons: When you have completed your list of recommended surgeons, you can make an appointment with them for a consultation. Make observations on the surgeon, his staff, their behavior, the office, and how they treat you. The most important note to observe is how the surgeon talks and acts with you, and if his views are responsible enough for you. Observe if the surgeon is friendly and does not seem rushed and busy as if he/she has other clients waiting on him/her. The surgeon’s attitude is what carves out his views in his profession, and you will be able to see if he/she is good enough for you. Compare and contrast each of the surgeons you visited and make out which ones stand out the most and are to your liking.

Check More Than Once: Check again with your chosen surgeons if you want. Checking more than once is highly suggested. Plastic or cosmetic surgery isn’t something a person undergoes on a whim. Some things could go wrong so making sure you have your details correct is important. Check on your chosen surgeons and select the one who stood out with the most recommendations and positive reviews. Take a look into their educational background, too, and see if he/she was involved in a neglect or malpractice lawsuit before. Go over his associations and certifications. You can also try to get his/her clients opinions on his/her services. Again, check more than once.

These steps may seem like hassle. But take note that going under the knife is not something you should trust to just any surgeon. Be patient and don’t do this in a hurried manner. The process of looking for the right surgeon could take months. It may take a lot of your time and a lot of research. But it’ll be worth it in the end when you’ve found that you’ve chosen correctly.
