How and When to Get Gastric Bypass Surgery
Nature has made every person and everybody different and beautiful the way they are. But that’s not an excuse to stay unhealthy. In drastic situations a gastric bypass procedure or GBP may be required to preserve one’s health.
GBPs are actually different kinds of surgeries, but they mostly follow a basic process. The stomach is divided into two: the upper, smaller part of the stomach is separated from the lower and much larger part. The reduction in the size of the stomach means that patients feel fuller faster with less food consumed. Part of the small intestine is also bypassed, though it is still connected to both parts of the stomach, which lets fewer calories be absorbed into the body. This may seem like an extreme procedure to undergo but it is considered one of the most successful ways to lose weight in a short amount of time.
Majority of patients who have undergone GBP have lost even more than 100 lbs. in a year and a half. However, there are fairly strict standards that have to be met to be able to have this type of surgery. There is an age minimum of 18 and a limit of 65. There should be no history of alcoholism or substance abuse. Most importantly, the patient should have been considered morbidly obese for several years leading to the time of surgery.
GBPs are not only simple but also effective. However, before considering gastric bypass as an option, one should first consult with a certified doctor who is experienced with this procedure.
